Canada is quickly becoming a popular destination for international students due to its low tuition fees, high-quality institutions, post-study work opportunities, and immigration policies. Since the announcement in 2016 of a student visa that allows them to stay and work in the country after graduation, students have been flocking to study in Canada. In recent years, Canada has seen a significant increase in demand from students looking to study abroad. 

What is a Study Permit?

The study permit is a document that enables foreign nationals to study in Canada at designated learning institutions (DLIs). Most foreign nationals require a study permit to study in Canada. Before you apply, make sure you have all of the necessary documents. You must apply before travelling to Canada.

A Canadian study permit, however, should not be confused with a Canadian student visa. A student visa enables you to live and study in Canada, whereas a study permit enables you to study in Canada from Nepal. Before travelling to Canada, you should apply for a Canadian study permit.

Requirements to apply for Canadian study permits

  • You should be enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada.
  • You should provide financial evidence stating that you can cover your expenses.
  • tuition fees.
  • Living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada.
  • Return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada. You must have received at least 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine accepted for travel, a mix of 2 accepted vaccines. 
  • You should be sure that you obey the law, have no criminal record, and get a police certificate (if required).
  • You should be in good health and get a medical exam (if required).
  • You should prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your Canadian study permit expires.

Required Documents for Study Permits

When applying for a study permit in Canada, you must submit a number of documents. We’ll walk you through the documents you’ll need to apply for a study permit in Canada.

Prerequisite Courses and Conditional Acceptance – Canada Study Permit

If you need to take a prerequisite course before beginning your main course of study, you will be granted conditional acceptance. In the case of conditional acceptance, the Canada study permit will be for the length of your prerequisite course plus one year. After completing this prerequisite course, you must apply for an actual Canadian study permit.

Proof of Identity for a Study Permit in Canada

You must provide proof of identity when applying for a study permit in Canada. If you are travelling with family, they will be required to provide proof of identity as well. The following documents are required to prove your identity:

  • A valid passport or travel document.

If you apply for a study permit in Canada online, you must include a copy of your passport’s information page.

  • Two recent passport-size photographs.

In addition to a valid passport or travel document, you must upload two recent passport-size photos. If you are applying for a Canada study permit offline, you must write your name and date of birth on the back of each photo.

Proof of financial support – Canada Study Permit

You must prove that you can support yourself and the family members who come with you, while you are in Canada. You can prove your funds with:

  • proof of a Canadian bank account in your name, if you’ve transferred money to Canada
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution
  • proof of a student or education loan from a bank
  • your bank statements for the past 4 months
  • a bank draft that can be converted to Canadian dollars
  • proof you paid tuition and housing fees
  • a letter from the person or school giving you money, or
  • proof of funding paid from within Canada, if you have a scholarship or are in a Canadian-funded educational program

Letter of explanation

This letter assists the visa officer in understanding you and your objectives. 

It clarifies:

  • Why do you want to study in Canada, and do you understand your student responsibilities?
  • Even if you don’t need a study permit for your program, you should include this letter if you decide to apply for one.

Acceptance Certificate from Québec

If you intend to study in Quebec for more than six months, you must obtain a Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) from the Gouvernement du Québec. Your school can provide you with all of the information you need to apply for the CAQ.

If your application for a CAQ was approved by the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI), but you are still waiting for the CAQ, you can apply for a study permit using the MIFI approval letter. You are not required to apply for the CAQ.

Students’ Responsibilities

While studying in Canada, you must:

  • Make progress toward completing your program, abide by any conditions listed on your study permit, and stop studying if you no longer meet the requirements.
  • Depending on an individual case, there may be conditions on your study permit, such as:
  • If you are allowed to work in Canada,
  • If you are allowed to travel within Canada,
  • The specific date must leave Canada
  • Where you can study ( a specific DLI listed on your permit)
  • You can’t study at a DLI other than the one listed on your permit.
